Description

This module follows on from CHM1401 and provides the practical skills required in order to carry out experiments effectively and safely in inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. The laboratory assignments focus upon the following: (i) the synthetic methods associated with interhalogen compounds; various transition metal complexes; the oxidation of alcohols; the aldol reaction; esterification; and solvent extraction procedures, (ii) the magnetic, spectroscopic and physical properties of various compounds made, in order to either elucidate or confirm molecular structure or purity, (iii) phase behaviour of particular systems so as to demonstrate ideal and non-ideal characteristics
